Subseries IV. Copies of Houdon Papers, 1735-1879, undated

 Series

Scope and Content Note

Organized in three groups: Subject Files, Number Files, and Miscellaneous Files.

Contains photostat copies of Houdon's papers, 1735-1879 and undated, including correspondence and other documents, typed transcriptions (in French), and miscellaneous notes. Subject Files contain typed transcriptions of 418 of the Houdon documents (in French), organized by subject matter. Some contain handwritten annotations by Miss Frick and Frick Art Reference Library staff. The files were originally stored in binders. The subjects listed below the binder title were taken from handwritten tabs within the binders. Documents within each category are not necessarily in numerical order.

Number Files are arranged numerically by the assigned document number. Files may contain any or all of the following: negative and positive photostats, typed transcription in French, carbon copy of transcription, an identifying tag, and in a few cases, English translations. Each file may contain a range of numbered items, as each page of a document was assigned its own number. Some documents were given duplicate numbers; they are distinguished by listing the second occurrence of a number as [number] bis. There was no document filed under the number 290.

Miscellaneous Files includes unnumbered Houdon documents, copies of Houdon papers from other repositories, and notes about the numbering of the documents.

Photostats of the Houdon papers are described using the document's original date of creation, rather than the date of the photostat, which is unknown. Three original documents can be found in the Number Files, 1802?-1807 and undated, and are noted in the container list below.
