Typescript photocopies of the English translations of the correspondence and diary of Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757), prominent Italian portrait artist. Originally in French and Italian, the documents were translated by Anna Kleinman. Collection also includes explanatory footnotes, biographical sketches of correspondents, and microfilm of the original documents.

Helen Clay Frick (1888-1984) was the daughter of industrialist and art collector Henry Clay Frick. She was also a philanthropist and founder of the Frick Art Reference Library in New York. This series contains calendars, diaries, and notes documenting Miss Frick's travels and daily activities over a period spanning nearly 80 years.

Scope and Content Note

Diary of March-April 1923 trip to South Carolina to identify and photograph paintings throughout the state for the Frick Art Reference Library. Lawrence Park, Helen Clay Frick (for 3 weeks of the trip), Ira Martin, and various friends of Miss Frick made the trip. The diary is handwritten and full of enclosures. It gives a detailed account of their activities (who they met, where they went, where they stayed, what they ate, and what they saw).

For the better part of his life, Gay lived in France, where he met and married heiress and fellow expatriate Matilda E. Travers (1855-1943). The bulk of this collection is formed by the diaries of Matilda Gay which provide detailed insight into the Gays' daily life as well as American expatriate life in France before, during, and after World War I.
