John Appleton Brown Sketchbooks
Scope and Content Note
Two small sketchbooks, approximately 7 in. x 4 in.
Volume one is a small sketchbook containing approximately 30 pencil drawings of lake and mountain landscapes and structures in the Swiss Alps, many with captions, along with some drawings of Parisian figures at the end.
Volume two is a small sketchbook containing approximately 35 pencil sketches of landscapes, figures, and botanical objects, and one page of musical notation.

Biographical Note
John Appleton Brown (1844–1902) was an American Impressionist painter. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts and studied in Boston and Paris. His teachers included Barbizon painters Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny. Returning to Boston in 1868, he married artist Agnes Bartlett. Aside from their trips to France in 1874 and England in 1886, Brown’s career was centered in New England. He spent time at the Impressionist colony in Old Lyme with Childe Hassam and at the salon of Celia Thaxter on Appledore, in the Isles of Shoals. Brown was elected to the National Academy in 1896.
