Lyckle de Vries Research Files on Jan Steen, circa 1970s-1990s.

 Collection
Identifier: MS.040

Scope and Contents

Files concern K. Braun's book, "Alle tot nu toe bekende schilderijen van Jan Steen," 1980. Lyckle De Vries cut out separately and mounted each of Braun's entries. Each separate entry was given its own file and the files were arranged, not by Braun's numbers, but by the numbers from C. Hofstede de Groot's "Beschreibendes und kritische Verzeichnis, vol. 1" (abbreviated as HdG). Many paintings have more than one HdG number, which are filed under the lowest number.

Files may contain: reproductions from sales catalogues; stock catalogues of dealers; exhibition catalogues; black and white museum photographs (mounted); photocopies of inventory cards of paintings in public Dutch collections; black and white photographs and color slides sent by art dealers, collectors and sales house (in envelopes); correspondence with owners and dealers on attribution, date, etc; notes on bibliography; handwritten notes on small slips of paper taken from the archives of dealers Duits and Douwes, now held at Getty Center, Los Angeles (mostly concerning pedigree); clippings of text from collection and exhibition catalogues (photocopies from Getty library); and handwritten notes on exhibitions on index cards.
