Biographical Note

Albert Joseph Moore (1841–1893) was a painter born in York, England to a family of painters. While many of his works are Neoclassical, his earlier work includes portraits as well as paintings that were inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement. There is little scholarship about Moore prior to the twentieth century, although one of his pupils, Alfred Lys Baldry, published a book about him in 1894.

Howard M. “Hap” Stoner (1933–2017) of New York, N.Y., once a senior vice president at advertising agency N.W. Ayer & Son, took an interest during retirement in art history and, more specifically, Albert Moore’s life and work. After auditing a course at Columbia University with Professor Allen Staley, he sought to further educate himself and others on Moore’s work, including traveling internationally to view all of Moore's known works in person. His research files contain evidence of his efforts to locate biographical works on the artist and write some of his own, ultimately culminating in an unpublished manuscript.
