Stokes: "Munkacsy - a wonderful colorist and composer - powerful draughtsman - dramatic - I and several American artists visited Munkacsy during the exhibition of his Christ Before Pilate and Crucifixion. He was very dignified almost austere - he with a certain air aristocratic apologized that he had so little work on hand."
