Subseries IV: Office Accounts, 1902-1942

 Series

Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists of journals, cash books, and checkbooks compiled by Henry Clay Frick's office staff in Pittsburgh, who typically included secretaries, bookkeepers, and stenographers. These employees managed a mix of personal, household, and business matters for Frick. Some office staff acted on behalf of the Frick family in the payment of certain bills using agent accounts established under their own names. The agent account journals in this subseries contain chronological entries made by C.F. Chubb from 1915 until 1933, and subsequently by Walter F. Cooley from 1933 to 1942. Chubb's entries are grouped either as general expenses, or as those of one of Frick's residences. Later, after Henry Clay Frick's death, expenses are classified as belonging to his estate, to Helen Clay Frick, to Childs Frick, or as shared expenses.

Cash books and petty cash checkbooks in this subseries record expenditures office supplies, along with goods and services procured for Frick's residences. Corresponding invoices for entries in these volumes may be found in the Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series IV: Receipts.

Along with the office employees mentioned above, Frick also hired renting agents who were responsible for the administration of Frick's office buildings (e.g. The Frick Building, Frick Annex, etc.) and smaller rental properties throughout Pittsburgh. This subseries contains the cash book of an unidentified renting agent dating from 1902 to 1904.
