Subseries III: Payroll, 1902-1916

 Series

Scope and Content Note

Subseries III: Payroll, 1902-1916. Contains one payroll book covering the period of 1910 to 1912, payroll receipt books for the years 1902 to 1912, and payroll sheets dating from 1904 to 1916. Books in this series document household staff at Frick's summer residence (Eagle Rock) in Prides Crossing, Mass., and at 640 Fifth Avenue in New York, which Frick leased from the Vanderbilt family from 1905 to 1914. Payroll sheets in this series provide a partial record of employeees in the house and gardens at Clayton; the house, gardens, and stable at Eagle Rock; the family's nearby farm in Hamilton, Mass.; 640 Fifth Avenue and 1 East 70th Street in New York; the New York garage (located at 129 West 51st Street); and Frick's office staff in Pittsburgh.

Overall, payroll records in this series are not complete, and represent only a portion of the available documentation regarding Henry Clay Frick's household staff. Payroll from 1892-1897 is found in the Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series: Invoice Books, Volumes 6 and 7. The original volumes, however, are too fragile for handling; please see the archivist for copies. From 1898 to around 1901, payroll was compiled monthly and filed in the Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series III: Voucher Files. Additional payroll records can be found in the One East 70th Street Papers, and above in Subseries II: Contingent Funds, where payroll information for some years can be found among the monthly expense reports.
