Series IV: Photographs, circa 1930s, circa 1944-2000

Series IV: Photographs, circa 1930s and circa 1944-2000, consists of black and white prints, Polaroids and other color photographs, negatives, transparencies, albums, card files, and documentation related to individual objects and private collections handled by the New York galleries (Rosenberg & Stiebel, Inc.; Stiebel Modern; and Stiebel, Ltd.).

Subseries 1: Objects, circa 1944-2000, is arranged by medium according to a classification scheme developed by Rosenberg & Stiebel, and then by inventory number. Associated documentation, which includes copies of invoices, attributions by art historians, research photocopies, conservation treatment reports, and notes, is filed separately; photograph files with such records are indicated by the note “Includes documentation.” Negatives and transparencies have also been physically separated from prints. Nearly all photographs are indexed with card files, which contain descriptive and sales information. Binders/photograph albums are generally duplicative of the individual photograph files and have not been fully processed.

Photographs and documentation for objects that were acquired or sold after 1969 are restricted. Files described as “Miscellaneous” or “No inventory # (x)” are subject to review prior to access.

Subseries 2: Collections, circa 1930s-2000s, is arranged by collector name and then alphabetically by artist name or by inventory number, when available. This subseries includes prints, negatives, and binders containing prints, as well as documentation. Photographs of additional collections which were acquired and sold prior to 1969 will be added to this finding aid as they are processed.
