Series I: Sales and Inventory Records, 1904-2011, bulk: 1939-2000
Scope and Content Note
Series I: Sales and Inventory Records, 1904-2011 (bulk: 1939-2000), consists of ledgers, stock books, card files, copies of invoices, collection inventories, and purchase lists, documenting the acquisition and sale of art objects. Materials are arranged into subseries based on the firm which produced them. The majority of material was created by Rosenberg & Stiebel, Inc., along with limited records from J. Rosenbaum, GmbH; I. Rosenbaum, N.V.; S. & R. Rosenberg, Ltd.; and Stiebel et Cie.
Records related to Stiebel Modern and Stiebel, Ltd., are restricted due to their recency, as are post-1969 sales records from Rosenberg & Stiebel, Inc.
Subseries 1: J. Rosenbaum, GmbH, 1904-1917, contains one volume, "Ankäufe des Herrn Henry Budge Hamburg" [Purchases by Mr. Henry Budge], consisting of a handwritten list of sales to this collector.
Subseries 2: I. Rosenbaum, N.V., 1931-1947, contains one volume detailing stock records, purchases, sales, and consignments from 1943-1947, as well as two files of inventories and stock lists. These include stock lists from 1931-1932, inventory lists from 1934-1939 and 1946, lists of shared accounts from 1940 and 1942, and “Transport-kontrolle” lists from 1934-1940. The subseries also includes an undated French inventory which may be related to Stiebel et Cie.
Subseries 3: Rosenberg & Stiebel, Inc., 1939-2000, contains ledgers, stock books, card files, copies of invoices, appraisals, collection inventories, and purchase lists. The earliest volume contains consignment records from 1939 and purchase and sale records from 1940. Purchase, sale, and consignment ledgers typically detail from whom an object was purchased and to whom it was sold, using unique inventory numbers, assigned chronologically, to distinguish objects. Profit-sharing with other dealers or stakeholders is also reflected in these volumes.
Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable ledgers are arranged alphabetically by the account name and include art sales and purchases from 1946-1991, generally cross-referencing the relevant purchase or sale ledger page.
Card files are arranged by inventory number and include a brief description of the object; information on when and from whom it was purchased; the cost, including shares with other parties; depreciation, if relevant; to whom the object was sold and when; and the sale and net prices. The earliest card file is from 1943, with significant gaps between inventory #51 and #3600. Records are nearly complete from #3600 (1958) through #6068 (2011).
Inventory numbers with a C prefix refer to consignments. These card files also include a brief description of the object; from whom it was received and when; the agreed upon minimum price; and the disposition description (returned or bought) and date. Records begin with #C.238 (1944) with many gaps through #C.4116 (1981).
This subseries also contains year-end inventories removed from ledgers; copies of invoices from 1954-2000; summaries of purchases arranged by client name; and inventories of collections purchased or received on consignment (including the collection of Clarice de Rothschild).
Subseries 4: S. & R. Rosenberg, Ltd., 1936-1968, includes two stock books. They do not generally include detailed acquisition or provenance information, but typically record the purchaser and purchase date. A significant number of sales are to Rosenberg & Stiebel, Inc.
Subseries 5: Stiebel et Cie, 1934-1940, includes one volume listing consignments, as well as one undated inventory removed from this volume.
