 Series

Scope and Content Note

Original order maintained. Portraits on Data Sheets 1-99 were printed in numerical order for Mitchell’s article, "James Sanford Ellsworth: American Miniature Painter," Art in America, Fall 1953. A second set of numbered Data Sheets, with the prefix "A" represents miniatures discovered after 1953, most of which appear in numerical order in the 1974 Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection exhibition catalogue, The Paintings of James Sanford Ellsworth: Itinerant Folk Artist 1802-1873.

Series contains data sheets for Ellsworth miniatures, oil paintings and copies known. The data sheets may contain fields such as: subject, owner, place painted, date or probable date, size, paper, color, signature, presence of chair and chair style no. , presence of aureole and/or hands, frame information, notes on whether the painting was previously recorded or reproduced, and exhibition history. The majority of the data sheets include black and white photographs of the paintings stapled to front of the sheets. It is noted if the data sheet contains a color image or has no photograph attached. Some data sheets also include a photograph of the reverse of the painting, clippings, or correspondence.
