Series V: Alterations
Scope and Content Note
This series, 1910-1970 and undated, includes specifications and correspondence for a small number of alterations made or considered by Henry Clay Frick, such as those to the house's Aeolian organ and the proposed additions by D.H. Burnham in 1911. Chiefly, however, these materials document changes during the period of 1938 to 1940, when Helen Clay Frick employed architects Milliken & Bevin to reduce the size of the main house, and landscape architects Innocenti & Webel to make changes on the grounds. These files contain correspondence, notes, specifications, estimates, contracts, and invoices documenting work both by the architects and by contractors such as Stephen Edwards, Robert Robertson Co., and Greenlaw Electric Co. A number of these are the Milliken & Bevin's own files, which are coded with a job number (e.g. #330 - Eagle Rock, #365 - Frick Pool, etc.), and include a small amount of work on Helen Clay Frick's property in Bedford, N.Y. This series also includes files concerning the demolition of the house (additional files can be found in Series VIII: Property), and correspondence with Edward B. Lee, the architect originally selected by Helen Clay Frick before ultimately settling on Milliken & Bevin.
