Houses at Prides Crossing, Mass. (PS-25), circa 1902-1906, 1950s?
Scope and Contents note
This album includes images of the Sears estate ("Woodrock"), Robert S. Bradley house, Tyson house ("Eagle Rock I"), and Myopia Hunt Club. The bulk of the album, however, consists of images of Eagle Rock, along with the surrounding grounds and outbuildings. Photographs depict construction of the house, exteriors of the completed residence, wide-ranging views of the grounds, and images of the stables, gardener's cottage, and automobile house. People depicted in the album include Henry Clay Frick, Adelaide Frick, Helen Clay Frick, Childs Frick, Martha Childs ("Attie"), coachman James Elmore, Christian F. Overholt, and Henrietta Thaw. The last page of the album contains later photos [circa 1950s?] of the estate in the winter.
Dates written in this album by Helen Clay Frick may be off by a year. The first images depicting Woodrock are labeled 1901, but according to documentary evidence, the Frick family did not begin leasing this house until the summer of 1902. The Frick family occupied Woodrock during the 1902 and 1903 summer seasons, and then leased the Robert S. Bradley house during the summer of 1904. The family does not appear to have rented a house during the 1905 season, during which the construction of their new country estate, Eagle Rock, was taking place. Eagle Rock was ready for occupancy in the summer of 1906.
For related material, see: Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series: Subject Files, #174 (Sears lease) for Woodrock leases for the 1902 and 1903 seasons, and #213 (Robert S. Bradley lease) for the 1904 rental. See also correspondence with North Shore realtors T. Dennie Boardman and George Lockhart Allen, which does not indicate the rental of a house in the area before 1902 (Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series II: Correspondence).
